German Exports Post Surprise Growth in 2025 Despite Trade Challenges

German exports recorded unexpected growth in 2025, marking their first annual increase in two years, driven by strong performance in December, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden.

The total value of German exports reached approximately €1.6 trillion last year, up 1% compared to 2024 after seasonal adjustments, reversing declines seen in 2023 and 2024.

Strong December Momentum

In December alone, German exports surged 4% month-on-month to exceed €133 billion, despite ongoing tariff disputes with the United States.

Exports to the United States rose by about 9% to €11.8 billion, while shipments to China climbed nearly 11% to €7.2 billion.

Exports to European Union countries also increased by 3.1%, surpassing €75.3 billion.

Improved Trade Balance

Imports also grew strongly by 4.4%, reaching €1.36 trillion, resulting in a trade surplus of around €200 billion.

The rebound in exports supports hopes for a broader economic recovery in Germany, which posted modest growth of 0.2% in 2025, narrowly avoiding a third consecutive year without expansion.

The German government expects growth of about 1% this year, with roughly a quarter of jobs in the country linked directly to export activity.
