Warnings Over Declining Cash Payments in Germany and Consumer Impact
Consumer protection centers have issued warnings about the decline of cash payments in Germany across shops, restaurants, and some public services, increasing difficulties for citizens in daily transactions.
The Federation of German Consumer Organizations said that cash payments in Germany are steadily decreasing, potentially excluding children and the elderly from full participation in society.
Calls to Protect Cash
The federation urged authorities to ensure the availability of cash payments in Germany even when modern technologies such as self-checkout systems, transport ticket machines, and parking meters are used.
Limited Exceptions
It emphasized that any exemptions from accepting cash should be legally narrow and well justified, such as when large banknotes are disproportionate to the amount due or when change is unavailable.
Experts believe preserving cash remains a key element in safeguarding consumer rights and financial inclusion.
